Amid LNG availability crisis: Petroleum Div asked to restart JJVL LPG extraction plant

National January 19, 2021 ISLAMABAD: Amid the impending LNG availability crisis in February, 2021 on account of backing out by UAE based LNG supplier (ENOC) of its commitment to provide an LNG vessel next month, the top management of Jamshoro Joint Venture Limited (JJVL) has asked the Petroleum Division (PD) to comply with the ECC decision by letting its LPG extraction plant resume operation. “Once JJVL’s LPG extraction plants comes on stream, it will start catering to the energy needs of over 750,000 homes across Pakistan. And this will also help contain the increasing LPG prices that have surged a lot mainly because of huge deficit of piped gas (local gas and RLNG) in the country,” unfolds the letter of JJVL written on Monday (January 18, 2021) to Special Assistant to PM on Petroleum Nadeem Babar.

In this file photo, Texas-based Excelerate Energy’s ship is seen next to Exquisite. The former conducted the 100th ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of LNG at the Engro Elengy Terminal at Port Qasim. ISLAMABAD: Overriding all objections from some private companies, the Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) on Tuesday granted marketing licences to Energas and Tabeer Energy for sale of regasified-liquefied natural gas (RLNG) to their customers. The licences would be valid for 10 years, starting Jan 8, 2021. Both applicants are stated to have their own customers in the private sector and would arrange LNG imports without any liability to the government by utilising pipeline network of gas utilities. Initially, they plan to also utilise spare capacity of the LNG re-gasification terminals.

The Sui Southern will today (Sunday) cease the supply of imported gas to the export industry. “Right now, no RLNG is available to CNG, fertilizer, and captive power as the government has stopped gas supply to power sector and export industry,” a senior official at the Petroleum Division confirmed to The News. The RLNG demand for January to the power sector stands at 250 mmcfd. However, the Sui Northern slashed the RLNG supply to 155 mmcfd some days back, which further tumbled to 125 mmcfd by last Friday (January 08, 2021) and now on Saturday, the RLNG gas supply to the power sector was virtually shut.
