Iowa man accused of using homemade chloroform in abduction June 4, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) Authorities on Friday arrested an Iowa man accused of hiding in the backseat a Nebraska woman’s car and using zip ties, duct tape and homemade chloroform to abduct the woman and imprison her in a storage shed at his home. Police arrested Zack Smith, 20, of Bronson, early Friday on charges of third-degree kidnapping, false imprisonment and two counts of assault, the Sioux City Journal reported. His bond was set at $250,000. Sioux City police said the woman was reported missing Thursday morning after her car was found abandoned with her purse and cellphone inside. Police focused on Smith, who was an ex-boyfriend of the woman.

Western Iowa farmers now have access to a lower-cost option to receive fertilizer and to export grains at the new “gateway to the world market.” NEW Cooperative constructed an $11 million port along the Missouri River near the small Monona County town of Blencoe, which is about halfway between Council Bluffs and Sioux City. It is the northernmost port on the nearly 760-mile span of the Missouri from St. Louis to Sioux City.

1:40 Higher than expected cost for Woodbury County’s Law Enforcement Center has members of the Woodbury Board of Supervisors looking at spending COVID-19 relief money on the project. The Sioux City Journal reports the board moved closer yesterday to allocating $15.6 million toward the jail, but took no action. The original estimate for the main phase of the project came in at $34 million. But, there is a 36% increase in cost. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds says she will be running for reelection in 2022. Radio Iowa reports she was asked by reporters in Lake View yesterday if she might run for the U.S. Senate if Republican Chuck Grassley decides to not seek another term. Reynolds says “she is not leaving Iowa” and will make a formal statement
