RRCA to host Coppelia this weekend

RRCA to host Coppelia this weekend Two casts of about 40 masked dancers will split this weekend’s four shows. “Coppelia” is the lighthearted 1870 tale of engaged couple Swanhilda and Franz. Their relationship takes a turn when Franz falls in love with Coppelia, a lifelike mechanical doll. Swanhilda and her friends investigate Coppelia by breaking into the workshop of toymaker Dr. Coppelius, Coppelia’s creator. To teach Franz a lesson, Swanhilda dresses as a doll and pretends to come to life. Dr. Coppelius humorously tries to bring Coppelia (Swanhilda in disguise) back to life. “Coppelia” ends in a big village wedding.

Earth Day 2021: Pandemic cuts down on paper at local schools

Earth Day 2021: Pandemic cuts down on paper at local schools There’s another reason for celebration this Earth Day: Schools are saving trees. More electronic devices in the hands of students translates to less paper at area schools. In some cases, that reduction has been even greater since the pandemic began. Bedford Public Schools, Airport Community Schools and St. Mary Catholic Central High School are among the local schools that are reporting a paper reduction. Bedford Bedford Public Schools, like other school districts, purchases paper literally by the truckload. Each load is 840 cases. Administrators are finding they are making these purchases less frequently.

Businesses adapt to survive pandemic

The COVID pandemic has forced local business owners to get creative. As restrictions tightened last year, businesses instituted practices like curbside pickup, online sales and private shopping hours, all in an effort to remain in business. “A lot of learning had to be done (to help) brick-and-mortar businesses keep afloat,” said Andrea Lechner, owner of Barn Owl Studio. “We are making it work by being creative with the business plan.” In Lechner’s case, that meant overhauling the plan. Her downtown Monroe do-it-yourself art studio relies almost solely on in-person guests. “Pre-pandemic, we packed the house weekly with walk-in Friday night DIY events, open public workshops and private parties, she explained.  We seat 35 people in the studio, and most parties were filled every seat, especially the First Friday events in downtown Monroe, where sometimes 100 people would walk through our door within a two-hour period.
