A proposal to limit increases in property taxes collected by local governments stalled on general file April 22 after a long debate and a failed motion to bring the bill up for a vote.
Under LB 408, as introduced by Sen. Tom Briese of Albion, a political subdivision’s property tax request the amount of property taxes requested to be raised through its levy could not exceed the prior year’s request by more than 3%.
A political subdivision could exceed the limit by an amount approved by a majority of registered voters in a primary, general or special election.

Requiring higher broadband speeds, and investigating fraudulent unemployment payments, were among topics discussed in the Nebraska Legislature Wednesday.
As the state and federal governments devote more money to expanding high speed broadband, lawmakers are considering what kinds of speeds to require. Under an amendment offered by Sen. Bruce Bostelman, construction subsidized by the state’s Universal Service Fund would have to provide speeds of 100 megabits per second for both uploads and downloads. Bostelman said it is needed to assure good service.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KMTV) Nebraska casinos won’t have to shut down during county and state fairs under a bill advanced by lawmakers.
First-round approval was given to the measure Tuesday that would add casinos to the list of allowable gambling activities during fairs.
The measure was introduced by state Sen. Ray Aguilar. His district includes a horse-racing track at Fonner Park that is scheduled to house both a casino and the Nebraska State Fair.
Happening in the Legislature this morning debate on when casinos could open during times like Fairs that have large numbers of youth around attending. So far only three fairs, Hall, Adams, and the State Fair would be affected. @NTVNEWS
