Billions of cicadas that have spent years patiently growing in complete darkness⁠⁠ will finally emerge, perfectly in sync, for a raucous party in the sun.  It s been 17 years, and the periodical insects, also known as Brood X, are back.  When the world last glimpsed the cicadas, Facebook was brand new, theaters were showing Spider-Man 2, and the 2004 Summer Olympics were underway.

While there are types of cicadas seen in Michigan every year, these particular periodical cicadas only show up every 17 years. There are several groups of cicadas, known as broods, that emerge in different locations throughout the United States, on different schedules.

The Brood X insects black insects measuring more than an inch long with orange and red wings have spent their immature years in the soil. But soon they ll scramble to the surface and emerge all at once in a scene that s almost biblical. There are 15 different types – or broods – of the cicada though, which means a type is emerging somewhere on the east coast almost every year. The last time Brood X emerged in North Carolina was 2004.
