George Charamba PRESIDENTIAL spokesperson George Charamba has revealed that Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga was the one who pushed for the removal of the running mate clause from the Constitution, dismissing speculative reports of a widening rift between President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his deputy. This followed reports that Mnangagwa’s loyalists had railroaded several constitutional amendments, including striking off the presidential running mate clause to curtail Chiwenga’s succession ambitions. Charamba, who is also Deputy Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet (Presidential Communications), yesterday conceded to the Zanu-PF information department that the running mate clause was “problematic” as it created a powerful and potentially disloyal VicePresident.

Speaking at the ruling party’s Youth League National Executive meeting held yesterday, Zanu-PF acting deputy secretary for youth affairs Tendai Chirau said it was not Zanu-PF’s objective to strengthen the opposition. “As a Party, we do not have in our objectives a function of strengthening the opposition. Thus, as ZANU-PF. We are not in power in order to lose it for any reason whatsoever, but to ensure that we keep it forever. It is our right,” Chirau told the Zanu-PF youth executives yesterday.

Agencies PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has send condolence messages to the families of two Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) pilots, a technician, and a child who died after a helicopter crashed in Chinyika, Goromonzi Friday. Among the deceased is 18-month-old toddler Jade Fenyere, who was sleeping with her twin sister, Jada, when the chopper plunged into their house. Jada escaped with burns together with the mother who later tried to rescue them. The mother and Jada were taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and later transferred to Trauma Centre in Borrowdale for treatment, and were reportedly in a stable condition Friday night.
