Golden leaf farmers are enemies from within says chief – RadioVop Zimbabwe

By Nhau Mangirazi   Hurungwe Chief Mjinga Mutenhe Madadairwa aged (75) is bitter that tobacco farmers are doing lot of injustice to the environment and are therefore enemies from within communities. He is aggrieved that communal farmers under his jurisdiction in Hurungwe East joined tobacco farming and are destroying forests. One of the affected areas is within Tengwe, formerly a prime farming area that produces cash crops including tobacco, soya beans, maize and wheat in Hurungwe district within Mashonaland West. He added, ‘‘Tobacco has brought a lot of devastation around our communities. We have witnessed unwarranted natural destruction of nature around,’’ Besides earning the country foreign currency of over one billion US dollars, Zimbabwe’s golden leaf farming has forced the country to witness deforestation where resettled farmers on large tracks of land have left it bare facing desertification.

Rainfall levels decrease as season nears end Agric, Environment & Innovations Editor Rainfall amounts have decreased significantly over the past month with slight chances of measurable showers to be received in some parts of the country in the coming weeks, the Meteorological Services Department said in an update. “Most of the areas across the country have not received rains in the past month. A few pockets have received some rainfall totals though they have been below 30 mm. As a result, there has not been any significant changes in the accumulated rainfall in many areas,” the Met Department said. “The majority of the country is within the above normal category in terms of the received precipitation. This area is mostly in the southern and western parts. The north-eastern areas have received rains within the normal category.”

Coca Cola Foundation, Danish Church In US$50 000 Bulawayo Borehole Project

By Bulawayo Correspondent WATER insecure Bulawayo has received another timely boost after Coca Cola Foundation and Danish Church aid pledged US$50 000 for the drilling of six boreholes to service the metropolitan province. The gesture follows last week’s commissioning of 10 boreholes at Epping Forest in Nyamandlovu by the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA). These two projects will go a long way in solving the city’s perennial water challenges. Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony of the six borehole water project in Emakhandeni high density suburb Thursday, city mayor Solomon Mguni said the project will enhance access to uninterrupted portable water by residents.
