Remember last year, when passing an Oscar pool around the office was a completely normal thing? The 2020 Academy Awards ceremony was one of the very last normal events of the before-times, and the 2021 version currently planned as some strange in-person gathering of partially-to-fully vaccinated celebrities in socially distanced circumstances, and absolutely not over Zoom is going to be a very strange marker for us all.

Farah Nabulsi was at home in west London when she found outher film The Present had been nominated for the Oscar for best live action short. Sheâd persuaded her teenage sons to stay home and watch the announcement. When she heard her name, she jumped up on the table. Her eldest looked at her as if sheâd gone mad. Heâd got it into his head that this was the actual ceremony and she had lost. âHe was like, âWhy are you so happy? They didnât pick you.â He killed the moment.â

It feels like a very long time since I wrote about last year’s Oscar-nominated short subjects, and indeed it’s been slightly
more than a year in 2020, the shorts were released theatrically in January, immediately prior to the Academy’s Feb. 9 awards ceremony. This year, the pandemic has pushed the Oscars all the way to April 25, and the shorts are only now being made available via Rialto Cinemas Elmwood and the Virtual Roxie.
There are a whopping eight films in this year’s animation category, and, to be honest, it’s a fairly weak crop. By far the best of the bunch is Erick Oh’s
