The benchmark indices were trading with modest gains in early afternoon trade. At 12:20 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, rose 343.03 points or 0.70% at 49,549.50. The Nifty 50 index gained 118.50 points or 0.80% at 14,941.65.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index added 0.82% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index rose 1.06%.
The market breadth was strong. On the BSE, 2,011 shares rose and 936 shares fell. A total of 197 shares were unchanged.

The manufacturing plants of Maruti Suzuki India will now be shut till May 16.
In view of the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic, Maruti Suzuki India has extended the maintenance shutdown at its manufacturing plants till May 16, 2021. A similar decision has been taken by Suzuki Motor Gujarat.
While Maruti Suzuki India has manufacturing plants in Gurgaon (Haryana) and Manesar (Haryana), Suzuki Motor Gujarat s facility is located in Ahmedabad.
The auto maker said that some activities would continue in the plants. The company has been informed that Suzuki Motor Gujarat has taken the same decision, it added.
In the last week of April 2021, the car major had advanced its bi-annual maintenance shutdown to 1st May through 9th May from earlier plan of June. As part of the car manufacturing process, Maruti Suzuki uses a small amount of oxygen in its factories while relatively much larger quantities are used by the manufacturers of components. In the current situation, the company believes that all available oxygen should be used to save lives, it said.

While annoucing the nine-day shutdown earlier, Maruti Suzuki had said the decision will help in making oxygen available for medical needs.
In view of the rising COVID-19 cases, Maruti Suzuki India has extended the maintenance shutdown at its plants till May 16.
Earlier, the company had decided to shutdown its factories from May 1-May 9 by advancing its bi-annual maintenance shutdown. This is to inform you that the maintenance shutdown, which was till the 9th May, 2021, is being extended till the 16th May, 2021 keeping in view the current pandemic situation. Some activities will continue in the plants, the automaker said in a statement.
