Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon will partially reopen on Saturday afternoon following mudslides that caused "extreme damage" to the roadway in late July. A short section will allow just one lane in each direction.
The current highway closure through Glenwood Canyon, which began back on July 29, will be partially lifted within days said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew.
Glenwood Canyon, a 12.5-mi. canyon in western Colorado, was closed on July 29 due to a severe mudslide in the Grizzly Creek burn scar area. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) highway maintenance personnel have been working to secure the roadway and protect life safety, but the combination of the fires from last summer and the extreme rain resulted in substantial damage to the roadway, necessitating a longer-term closure of the Interstate.
“The corridor is vital for everything from long-haul freight to movement of agricultural products,” Colorado officials said of mudslide-damaged areas of Interstate 70.
