Wham’s Last Christmas finally claims Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart 36 years after its release and breaks a new Official Chart record in the process, the Official Charts Company can confirm.
The festive favourite climbs from 3 to 1 after racking up 9.2 million streams over the past week, reaching the summit on the fourth anniversary of George Michael’s death.
Last Christmas sets a new record for the longest time taken to for a single to reach Number 1, at 36 years, overtaking Tony Christie’s (Is This The Way To) Amarillo, which took 33 years and 4 months to claim the top spot (March, 2005).

Congratulations to Taylor Swift who claims this week’s highest new entries on both the Official Irish Albums and Singles Charts.
Taylor’s surprise-released ninth studio album Evermore opens at Number 3, behind Dermot Kennedy’s Without Fear (1) and Bruce Springsteen’s Letter To You (2). Taylor’s sixth consecutive Top 3 album, Evermore was the most downloaded and streamed album of the week.
On the Official Irish Singles Chart, Evermore’s lead single Willow matches the placement of its parent album, going in at Number 3. Album cut Champagne Problems opens at Number 6, and HAIM collaboration No Body, No Crime lands at Number 11. In total, Taylor now has 38 Top 50 hits to her name.
