Australia s bushfires circle Sydney as temperatures soar Reuters

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Catastrophic conditions fueled massive bushfires across Australia s New South Wales state on Saturday, with two blazes around Sydney burning at emergency level, while in South Australia one person was found dead in a fire zone.
Some major roads heading to the south and west from Sydney were closed for part of the day and authorities asked people to delay travel at the start of the Christmas holiday period, warning of the unpredictability of the fires due to high winds and temperatures above 40°C (104F).
Australian firefighters access badly burned towns Reuters
dimanche, 22 décembre 2019 à 13:10 - Nearly 100 fires were still burning across New South Wales late on Sunday afternoon, though none were rated as emergencies.
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Firefighters battling wildfires in Australia made the most of cooler weather on Sunday to access badly burned towns and contain blazes before the expected return of hotter conditions at the end of the week.
The reprieve came as Prime Minister Scott Morrison defended both his government s climate change policies and his decision to go on holiday to Hawaii last week.
The leader of New South Wales, Gladys Berejiklian, said catastrophic fire conditions on Saturday in parts of the prime minister s home state had destroyed communities.
Residents, visitors urged to leave Australian region as fire conditions worsen Reuters
dimanche, 29 décembre 2019 à 12:25 - Victoria is expecting dangerous fire weather on Monday and Tuesday.
MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Residents and vacationers in part of the Australian state of Victoria were urged to leave on Sunday ahead of what is expected to be a day of extreme fire danger.
Authorities said temperatures of more than 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit), strong winds, thunderstorms and a wind change moving across the state meant Monday would be one of the most significant fire weather days in Victoria s history.
State Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp told both residents and tens of thousands of vacationers in the East Gippsland region to leave no later than Monday morning.
At least four other people remain unaccounted for on Saturday evening, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison saying he feared the number of deaths could rise.
Conference to help wine sector prepare, respond and recover from fire
April 9th, 2021
The grape and wine community will gather at locations around Australia for the National Wine Sector Bushfire Conference on 25 May 2021 to explore the learnings from the 2020 vintage and how to prepare, respond and recover from future fire events.
The free, one day conference will focus on delivering information to ensure that growers and winemakers are better prepared, better informed and better equipped to handle the decisions that need to be made before, during and after the almost inevitable circumstances of fire in Australian summers.
The nation-wide event comes just over a year following fires around Australia that raised new research projects to improve the sector’s response to fire and smoke.
