Daimler Trucks Daimler and Shell are teaming up on a hydrogen corridor in northern Europe, with a plan to build 150 stations, joining Cologne, Hamburg, and Rotterdam. Mercedes-Benz recently began tests of its hydrogen fuel-cell truck, intended to go into production in the second half of the decade. Daimler envisions hydrogen fuel-cell trucks being used for longer routes, while EV trucks could handle shorter delivery routes. Daimler Trucks AG is teaming up with Shell New Energies NL B.V. to make hydrogen fuel-cell trucks happen in Europe, via the production of some 5,000 Mercedes-Benz heavy-duty fuel cell trucks by 2030, and through the expansion of hydrogen refueling infrastructure, including the construction of 150 stations. As part of the move, Ørsted North America will open an office in New Jersey’s largest city to handle its digital operations for North America, namely its offshore wind infrastructure. State officials are eyeing the offshore wind and clean energy industry as key economic sectors for the state’s post-COVID economic recovery. Gov. Phil Murphy’s goals call for the availability of 7.5 gigawatts of offshore wind by the year 2035.

The company expanded from its initial focus on geothermal heat pumps into fuel cells, battery storage, microgrids and, more recently, batteries combined with solar as well as reciprocating engines for co-generation, said Tom Chadwick, Endurant CEO. “What we found was we were an integrated house with one big gap, and that was capital,” he said. Ultimately, a strong balance sheet is required to develop projects, according to Chadwick. “You need it to be able to give the customer what they want, which I think is, increasingly, an alternative to utilities,” he said. Endurant’s projects range from single technology energy retrofits of historic landmarks to large-scale microgrids integrated with resource management and smart-city infrastructure.

(AP) A company planning a wind energy farm off New Jersey’s southern coast will deploy two research buoys to study conditions in the area envisioned for its development. The devices from Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind will collect atmospheric and weather data in the area, and track the migration of birds, fish, turtles and other animals that live there. The data will be shared with researchers at Rutgers University. The buoys are due to be deployed next month. The research comes as activity ramps up off New Jersey’s coastline to establish wind-powered energy sources.
