In 2016, the comedian and social commentator W. Kamau Bell filmed an episode of his CNN series, “United Shades of America,” in Portland. Back then, the question was, had Black Portlanders been forced to move away from their historic Portland neighborhoods after they were gentrified by supposedly “hip” and “cool” whites?

This is an update to 50 authors, 50 science fiction stories shorter than novels. It s mostly an addition of 30 more authors (many from outside the big SF names ) but I also made some other tweaks.
I ve been playing around with re-reading favorite science fiction short stories while also seeing if there s anything that has managed to elude me over the years. I ve also tried to catch up with more recent authors given that I don t read as many books as I used to. (The market for science fiction short stories, in general, is in something of a decline but there are still some fabulous recent stories out there.)
WHAT IT S ABOUT:
Catherine (Amanda Seyfried) and George (James Norton) Claire are a married couple with a young daughter, Franny (Ana Sophia Heger), who move from Manhattan to a very old house in a small town in upstate New York when the latter lands a job at a prestigious art college. It soon becomes clear to Franny and Claire that the house holds dark, supernatural secrets, but those secrets may be far less devastating than George s own web of lies that quickly starts to unravel as his behaviour becomes increasingly erratic.
WHAT WE THOUGHT:
Disclaimer: I will, as always, do my best to avoid any actual spoilers in this review, but the real pleasure of this admittedly flawed but compelling film is the ride it takes the audience on by subverting expectations and taking its time before even revealing exactly what kind of story it s telling, so perhaps give it a watch before proceeding with this review. For me, my Voice of Discordia comes from my lifelong anxiety and depression. Most days, the voice – my inner monologue that tries to tell me that chances of success are too small, that I’m not good enough, and nothing I do will matter – is manageable. I can deal with it and push through. Other days, it’s a cacophony, a weight that crushes me down.
Imagine a world painted in crimson, amethyst, and onyx hues. The sky is a cauldron of smoky clouds and stabs of lightning. Our hero, the protagonist, beaten and wearied, stands with a brilliant blade held aloft in an endless battle against the insidious and darkly robed villain.
