A new program will pair 68 youth who have been involved in the juvenile justice system with 23 mentors in an effort to curb violence, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley and several community partners announced Wednesday.
During a news conference at Sherman Park, Crowley expressed concerns about how arguments have escalated into violence, particularly after a violent 2020 that set a record for homicides in Milwaukee.

The Sherman Park Boys and Girls Club in Milwaukee’s Sherman Park was the backdrop for an announcement Wednesday about a new mentoring program for Milwaukee-area youth involved in the criminal justice system. The location was fitting as just a couple of weeks ago, a 17-year-old was fatally shot in the park.

Fed up with the deaths and damage caused by reckless driving, 18 community groups in Milwaukee are launching a series of efforts to persuade drivers to slow down.
The groups received a total of $102,000 in grants from the city’s Department of Public Works to fund the campaigns.
One of those groups is the Villard Avenue BID, which will launch “I matter, you matter, we matter” and #SlowDownVillard campaigns during a six-week safe summer concert series. Its plans include educational booths with information on the dangers of reckless driving as well as driver’s education programs for youth.

Cooler weather settles in Wisconsin through mid-May
MILWAUKEE - We ll have to wait a while until our next 80° temperatures as cooler than average air settle in for the next couple of weeks. This won t be an arctic blast by any means, but our warm start to May will become a thing of the past.
