San Diego neighbors find ways to connect, continue community building amid COVID-19

SAN DIEGO    Neighborhood groups groaned earlier this year when they had to cancel in-person events and move their meetings to online-only sessions. Now some of them like meeting virtually, so much so that several said they may keep some online components to their interactions, even when the COVID-19 threat is gone. “It’s a lot easier to schedule meetings and prepare for the meetings virtually,” said Oak Park resident Richard Diaz. “You don’t have to set up tables and chairs or secure a space to meet.” Recently, a handful of Mount Hope residents armed with ideas about ways to improve their single-family neighborhood in southeastern San Diego logged into a virtual meeting.

2020 was extraordinarily difficult — and San Diego rose to the challenge

This has been an extraordinarily difficult year. Over 325,000 people have died from a pandemic in the United States since February. The economic fallout is exasperating for millions who have lost their jobs or are having trouble paying their bills, and for all those facing eviction who have no supportive resources. Thousands still are persecuted by immigration agencies that target working families, and migrant children are still being deported without state protection. To top it off, a tumultuous election year has exposed the underbelly of the much-touted “post-racial” democracy, as violence by White supremacists remains the most significant threat to the country, and some in government gratuitously endorse that violence. Cumulatively, 2020 has been a catastrophic failure on all accounts.

Sherman P&Z approves Tesch and Associate plans for two FM 1417 apartment communities

Herald Democrat For the past several years, Sherman leaders have viewed FM 1417 as the next major growth corridor for the city. Now, a newly proposed development may bring that vision closer to reality. The Sherman and Zoning Commission approved early plans and zoning on Tuesday night for a new 70-acre mixed-use development that hopes to bring retail and residences to the burgeoning corridor. Developers with Tesch and Associates presented plans across multiple agenda items to transform the intersection of OB Groner and FM 1417 into a mixture of residential and retail uses. These plans include a traditional 276-unit apartment complex alongside a low-density apartment community, featuring individual small homes for rent.
