Kāinga Ora wants to build high-rise social housing apartments on this Dent St site in central Whangārei. The empty site, which used to be a childcare facility, was originally set aside for a hotel development. Both sites are close to the Kamo shared path, walking distance to schools, support services and supermarkets, and close to jobs, he said. “With car parking, one suggestion would be to reinvest in a car parking building elsewhere.” The suggestion to buy the two prime sites garnered a range of reaction from elected members, from alarm to support. Councillor Vince Cocurullo said the two sites are better suited to a commercial development than residential.
Neville Bench, Bench’s brother, said they had both spent all of their lives in Whangārei. Bench’s two children had moved to Auckland and Australia as adults, but Bench and his wife remained in Northland. “People here did all they could do to find him,” Neville Bench said on the search for his brother. Bench’s family said they want to thank the “amazing” Whangārei community for the huge effort people put in during the search for Bench. They did not want to comment further as it is still quite raw, they said. Bench was found by searchers near the summit of Mount Parihaka, an ancient volcano with a scenic reserve.
