As the weather gets warmer, and the snow melts, an excellent family activity is hunting for shed antlers. Deer, elk and moose shed their antlers every winter, usually between November and March.
Shed antler hunting is one of the fastest growing outdoors activities, and a way to extend your time in the field, and a way to bond with family, young kids especially. The antlers typically carry a large amount of character as no two antlers are ever the exact same.
One challenge to shed hunting is trying to find a matched set. As deer don’t always shed the two antlers at the same time, often the antlers can be miles apart. If you can hunt on a feed ground, it is easier to find a matching set of sheds than when you are hunting in the hills or on the mountain.
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has announced that Buffalo resident Jared Bailey is the first angler in the Sheridan Region to reach Ultimate Angler status in the Game and Fish Department’s Master Angler program. The program, initiated in June 2019, recognizes anglers who catch trophy-sized game fish in Wyoming waters.
Anglers who catch one fish species of a trophy size earn the title of Master Angler, five different trophy-sized species earn the title of Trophy Angler and those who catch 10 or more trophy-sized species get the title of Ultimate Angler.
What qualifies as a trophy size has been determined based on historical Game and Fish sample data. The qualifying sizes represent the top five percent of fish. For example, for brown trout, the typical length is 18 inches. The minimum qualifying length for Master Angler is 23 inches.
