Parents and students of schools in Sheridan County School District 2 have expressed opinions on both sides of the decision to end the mask mandate in the county’s schools.
Craig Dougherty, who’s superintendent of the district, elaborated during a presentation on Public Pulse earlier this week.
Dougherty said the decision to ask for an end to the mandate was made in collaboration of all three of Sheridan County’s School Districts, and it wasn’t made overnight.
The third and final public forum for candidates for the district superintendent position for Johnson County School District #1 was held Wednesday night at the Buffalo High School Auditorium.
Charles Auzqui, who is the current Superintendent and K-12 Principal with Sheridan County School District #3, spoke about growing up and attending schools in the Buffalo area and his experience during his years as an educator in Wright and in Clearmont.
He told those attending that he is not looking at the position as a “stepping stone” to somewhere else, but as a long-term destination in a dream job.
Auzqui said he will do what is best for the kids and will be transparent in the process.

Administrators of Sheridan County School District 2, the schools in Sheridan and Story Elementary, are still working on the budget for the year that starts on July 1, but Superintendent Craig Dougherty expects the total to be close to what was budgeted for this year.
In dollar terms, that’s projected to be in the $49 to 50 million range, he said. He said the education budget that passed the Legislature this year maintains a status quo position.
Dougherty said the district will continue to work with the Legislature.
Dougherty said Wyoming’s Legislature this year basically punted the funding challenges that the state faces during the current financial crisis. Overall, he said, that isn’t a good thing. But because of that, he said, the negative impact that school districts face in the coming year is flat, with no reductions in revenue.
Johnson County School District #1 held the second of three public forums for candidates for the district superintendent position Monday night at the Buffalo High School Auditorium.
Keith Harris, who is the current Assistant Superintendent of Dickinson, ND Public Schools, spent the early part of the day in Kaycee before the forum at BHS and an interview with the school board afterwards.
Harris spoke about his experience during his career, which started as a teacher and coach in Driggs, Idaho; moving to a principal in Afton, Wyoming; serving as curriculum director in Cowley, Wyoming; before taking his current position.
He said he is familiar with Johnson County and the schools and their reputation for excellence and wants to continue that while building on the excellence.
