Hipmunk’s founders launch Flight Penguin to bring back Hipmunk-style flight search
Hipmunk’s founders are building a successor to their now-defunct flight search service.
The startup was acquired by SAP-owned travel and expense platform Concur in 2016, and its CEO Adam Goldstein departed in 2018. But Goldstein told me he and his co-founder Steve Huffman (also co-founder and CEO of Reddit) were still disappointed when Concur shut the service down at the beginning of last year.
“Over the years, there were millions and millions of people who used it and loved it,” Goldstein said. (I was one of those people even before I knew what he was working on, I started out our call by telling Goldstein how much I miss Hipmunk.)
Flight Penguin is a new flight search Chrome app that promises ‘no collusion’

The founders of Hipmunk are launching a new startup today that’s aimed squarely at taking on their own former product. Called Flight Penguin, it’s a Chrome browser extension that simultaneously searches a bunch of airline websites and then presents the results in a familiar format. Rather than taking a commission or affiliate fee, Flight Penguin will instead charge its users $10 per month it’s designed for people who travel a lot (or, since there’s still a pandemic on, people who will imminently travel a lot).

A little over a year since SAP Concur shuttered metasearch engine Hipmunk, which the company had acquired in 2016, Hipmunk founders Adam Goldstein and Steve Huffman have launched a new venture in the metasearch market.
Called Flight Penguin, the Chrome extension launches today and is billed as a direct competitor to Kayak (the company s website goes so far as to say It s time to put Kayak on ice ).
Flight Penguin differs from Hipmunk in that Flight Penguin is a Chrome extension, not a website, that works from a customer s browser to pull the most up-to-date airfare prices.

Recall effort targets 2 Benicia school trustees; Vaca council may be next
FAIRFIELD Two members of the Benicia School District board have been targeted for recall, and the county Registrar of Voters Office has received recall inquiries about the Vacaville City Council.
John Gardner, the assistant registrar of voters, said Thursday the office is just waiting for proof that the notice of intention to circulate a recall petition has been published to give the final OK to collect signatures in Benicia.
The trustees who are the subject of the recall are Sheri Zada, who represents Trustee Area 1, and Mark Maselli, who represents Trustee Area 4. Both have terms that end in 2022.
