Yardi Gras Stories: The Garden District throws a house float party

Sign by neon artist Nate Sheaffer. The Garden District, bordered by the Uptown parade route on St. Charles Avenue, is a neighborhood that parties during Carnival time. The neighborhood’s Krewe of House Floats theme, “Garden Party,” reflects their spirit.  “One of the best parts of living in our amazing neighborhood is the access to so many magical Mardi Gras parades and the spirit of the season,” Garden District subkrewe Captain Meghan Caye Turner said. “When I heard the concept of Krewe of House Floats, I knew it was important to keep the spirit alive in our neighborhood, while supporting local artists and shops.”

NCDHHS partners with ECU to promote SlowCOVIDNC application

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) has partnered with East Carolina University to promote the release of SlowCOVIDNC, an application which utilizes contact-tracing to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Deputy Secretary for Technology and Operations at NCDHHS Sam Gibbs said SlowCOVIDNC is an app that notifies users if they’ve been within six feet of someone, for 15 minutes or more, who has tested positive for COVID-19. Gibbs said if users test positive, they can key in a unique PIN number given to them by the health center which returns the results. Gibbs said after the app alerts those who have been in contact with a COVID-19 positive individual, it will tell the student to go to the student health center to get tested and other required treatment. Then, the health center will give the student a unique PIN number to put in the app themselves. He said the app exchanges random codes during the exchange process, which keeps users anonymous.
