More fresh basil recalled over intestinal parasite risk
A few months after its last recall, Shenandoah Growers Inc has recalled additional fresh basil products over the risk of contamination with the
Cyclospora parasite, which can potentially lead to an intestinal infection called
Cyclosporiasis. The voluntary recall has been made ‘out of an abundance of caution,’ the company says, noting that it involves fresh organic basil packed at its Indianapolis facility.
Cyclospora is, according to the Centers for Disease Control, a microscopic parasite that, when consumed via contaminated food or water, can cause an infection. The symptoms caused by
Cyclosporiasis start around a week after the contaminated food is eaten, and includes things like weight loss, loss of appetite, bloating, gas, fatigue, nausea, and watery diarrhea.
Fresh cut, imported basil from Colombia is facing a recall over concerns it’s contaminated with cyclospora, a microscopic parasite that can cause an intestinal infection if ingested, officials said.
Listeria monocytogenes and
Pathogens
Orca Specialty Foods has recalled its One Ocean brand Sliced Smoked Wild Sockeye Salmon due to the possible presence of
Listeria monocytogenes. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says the products was distributed in British Columbia, and advises consumers not to consume the product with a UPC of 6 25984 00005 3.
Meanwhile, in the US, the Food and Drug Administrations has reported the recall of basil, thanks to a possible contamination with
Cyclospora. Several products containing basil produced by Shenandoah Growers are affected – for a full list of the affected products and states visit the FDA’s website.
