‘Collecting Art is Like Writing a Biography, Finding a Way to Tell the Story of Our Lives’
León Amitai speaks about his collecting journey and interest in textile art and geometric abstraction
Kristina McLean: I’m very excited to talk to you today. This is a new format that we’re experimenting with at Frieze to create content for our collecting community because, as you know, people love reading about other collectors and what they’re looking at. So, I’m really thrilled that you’ve agreed to participate. Firstly, you work with textiles in your business life, and you also collect art involving fabrics and textiles. Did you focus on textile from the beginning of your collecting journey? Where did it begin?

Tia Ansell has been enthralled by weaving since she was a child.
But it was a trip to South America famed for its rich weaving history that sealed the deal.
“When I was 12 we went to Peru. We visited a weaving co-operative in the Andes where Quechua women wove and had workshops this was my first experience of weaving culture.”
But not her last.
Weaving is the basis for the 25-year-old’s fine art practice, which sees her handweaving her own surfaces before applying oil paint in restrained shapes that follow the grid-like patterns of the weaving, a process that requires patience and restraint.
Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art debuts Crafting America, which will be on view February 6 to May 31, 2021, with an array of programs and a virtual experience of the exhibition. Crafting America is the first exhibition at Crystal Bridges dedicated to the subject of modern and contemporary craft. With over 120 objects made from materials such as wood, glass, fiber, ceramics, metal, and more from 98 American artists, the exhibition tells a broad and inclusive story of craft in .
