First Person Singular marks Haruki Murakami s welcome return to his signature style

Apr 5, 2021 What makes a writer’s voice addictively readable, selling millions of copies in 50 languages? And how can the same voice remain deeply personal while also speaking to readers all over the globe? For Haruki Murakami, Japan’s maestro of contemporary fiction, first-person narratives were his signature style for years, until he transitioned to the third-person in recent works such as “1Q84” and “and “Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage.” His collection of short stories “First Person Singular,” which will be released in English April 6, marks a welcome return to the voice that helped the writer gain international acclaim.

Review: A new collection of stories by Haruki Murakami

(Knopf via AP)AP “First Person Singular,” by Haruki Murakami (Alfred A. Knopf) Haruki Murakami has a new collection of stories told in the first person by an unnamed older man obsessed with baseball, music, and the porous borders between memory, reality and dreams. He may describe himself as a “bland, run-of-the-mill guy,” as in the story “Cream” about a young man’s encounter with an aging mystic but Murakami Man is more like a walking encyclopedia who has a problem with women mainly, that he can’t seem to get past their physical appearance.
