The Olympic mascots aren t winning any medals

Jul 28, 2021 Before the pandemic, the Japanese designer who created the Olympic and Paralympic mascots predicted that they would become the “face of the Games.” It hasn’t quite turned out that way. The two mascots are ubiquitous in the Olympic merchandise being sold around Tokyo as the Games unfold. But in a country where mascots play a major role in corporate branding and merchandising, they have mostly been a subdued presence at the very event they were made for. The Japanese public is not really swooning over them either, according to fans and experts who study the country’s mascot industry. The mascots’ social media profiles are modest, and a common complaint is that their names Miraitowa and Someity are hard to remember.

Beijing s Coercion Keeps Inner Mongolians Away from Human Rights Rallies in Japan

~~ ~ Uyghurs, Tibetans, and people from Hong Kong who live in Japan held a human rights rally on July 1, when the Chinese Communist Party celebrated the 100th year of its founding. However, those from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region did not participate. The Chinese government authorities had maneuvered in advance, using their families and friends at home to apply pressure, The Sankei Shimbun learned on July 9.  The intimidation reportedly included threats of imprisonment of relatives back home for any Inner Mongolians who dared to join the rally. The revelation highlights how the Chinese government, which has adopted a policy of depriving Inner Mongolia of education in its own language and suppression of the ethnic Mongolian culture, has extended its reach to the coercion of Inner Mongolians living in Japan.
