Photo by Patrick Keck. PORTSMOUTH City departments discussed their work, plans, and needs during Saturday’s organizational meeting held at Shawnee State University. The work ranged from public health missions to infrastructure, but common themes did emerge in terms of their wants in the new year. Many departments took the opportunity to explain their needs to boost its digital capabilities, the potential hiring of interns to assist in data collection and increasing their physical office space.

Every year, the association recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of Shawnee State alumni who are making strives within their careers and throughout their communities. The presentation of the Alumni Awards celebrates achievements in professional development, individual endeavors, service to Shawnee State University, contributions to community, and the impact of university education on an alumni’s professional career. Six awards are presented each year: Alumnus of Tomorrow, Distinguished Alumnus, Medal of Merit, Alumni Community Service, Outstanding Recent Graduate, and Alumni Continued Service.

That list is long and includes a variety of fields where a college degree is as essential as the job itself. At the very top is health care. We need nurses. We need respiratory therapists, lab technicians, mental health professionals, and rehabilitation specialists. These careers were in demand long before the pandemic and the crisis of the past year has underscored just how critical the next generation of graduates is in our ability to continue to meet that demand.

She helps lead tours, answer questions, and share SSU traditions and history. PORTSMOUTH Abby Blankenship enjoys showcasing her love of Shawnee State University as a Student Assistant in the Office of Admissions. A junior in the 3+2 Occupational Therapy program, Blankenship has also served as an Orientation Leader for prospective students in past years. “I wanted to be an Orientation Leader because I love getting to represent my school and showing people how truly special it is,” she said.
