MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota From Hennepin Avenue to Lake Street, there s an increased presence of Minnesota National Guard service members outside businesses in Minneapolis.
Last Wednesday, more than a dozen soldiers were set up outside Two Bettys Green Cleaning Service s Refill Station on East Lake Street.
Their presence came as a surprise to the staff member who was working at Two Bettys at the time. The guardsmen have big weapons, like across the outside of their body with their hands on the weapon, and the staff member that was here turned off all the lights and ran and hid because it was really frightening, said Anna Tsantir, owner of Two Bettys.

$9 million in emergency funding to bring peace officers from other states into Minnesota after a week of protests and public safety officers were fired at and injured Sunday morning.
In a morning press conference, Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka, R-East Gull Lake, said Gov. Tim Walz spoke with Minnesotaâs legislative leaders about the emergency funding, $9 million of which would handle civil unrest to pay for troopers.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz declared a state of emergency Monday and announced his intent to surge officers from nearby states to stave off possible violence following the trial of Derek Chauvin, the ex-officer accused of killing George Floyd.
Walz s order applies to the seven-county metropolitan area of Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington as reports of individuals engaging in unlawful and dangerous activity, including looting and damaging public and private property mount, he said.
The Democratic governor intends to surge law enforcement personnel from Ohio and Nebraska to curb the potential violence, along with the full deployment of local and state resources, including the National Guard, which has proven to be inadequate to address the threat, he said.
