PML-N sidelined as PTI, PPP discuss Senate committees - Pakistan

DawnNewsTV/File ISLAMABAD: The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and the Pakistan Peoples Party held a meeting on Thursday to discuss allocation of the Senate’s standing committees, sidelining a powerful 27-member group of opposition senators who refuse to accept PPP’s Yousuf Raza Gilani as leader of the opposition and seek a separate identity, informed sources told Dawn. The sources said the meeting between Dr Shahzad Waseem, leader of the house in the Senate, and Yousuf Raza Gilani, leader of the opposition, was called to work out a formula for allocation of standing committees. It was attended, among others, by federal ministers Syed Shibli Faraz and Azam Swati, and PPP’s parliamentary leader in the upper house, Sherry Rehman.

Sources in the government and the opposition parties told Dawn on Sunday that an understanding between the two sides had already been reached over the number of standing and functional committees and the distribution of chairmanship responsibilities among them, but the allocation of committees was yet to be sorted out.

PML-N’s Azam Nazeer Tarar who heads the opposition lawmakers’ new bloc took the floor when the Senate session started and said that the 27 opposition lawmakers – belonging to the PML-N, the JUI-F, PkMAP, the NP and the BNP-M – are independent senators.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Communication Shahbaz Gill on Tuesday took to Twitter and announced that the premier has decided to appoint two new members in the Senate. Per the decision, Senator Fida Mohammad has been appointed as the  PTI s chief whip in the Senate, while Senator Ejaz Chaudhary will be the new Parliamentary Leader of the PTI in the Senate, Gill wrote. As reported by Geo.tv, Senator Fida Mohammad was preceded by Sajjad Turi, who is not a senator anymore, while Senator Ejaz Chaudhary has replaced Dr Shahzad Waseem.
