La Traviata, the three-act opera by Giuseppe Verdi at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), sold out four days before the opera s premiere on Thursday.
The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, led by renowned conductor Yu Long, performed the music for the opera, which features diva Zhang Liping as Violetta Valéry and Shi Yijie as Alfredo Germont.

The UK’s National Theatre has recently has recently launched three online theatrical performances: “Angels in America”, “Miss Julie” and “Antigone”. Non-members can spend £9.99 (approximately 90 RMB) for a three-day lease. China’s Tencent Video has also worked with New Live to release 19 works of the British Shakespeare’s Globe, where non-members can watch at a cost of 20 RMB (approximately £2.19).
Tazmin Barnes, Di Xiao and Jiaxin Cheng Music lovers have the chance to attend a special online concert from the University of Birmingham marking the Chinese New Year with a magical fusion of East and West. World-class pianist Di Xiao will be joined by renowned cellist Jiaxin Cheng and 18-year-old singer-songwriter to help the University’s China Institute to celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Metal Ox with a mix of traditional Chinese and Western pieces. The event streams on YouTube from Monday, 8 February. It will also premiere on the University’s page at 13.00 GMT on Wednesday 10 February.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) Tributes have been pouring in for Shirley Young, a legendary business leader and long-time advocate for China-U.S. exchanges, who died on Saturday at the age of 85.

Young was an outstanding lady, who not only had great business achievements, but also devoted her lifetime to advocating for the interests of Chinese Americans and the mutual understanding between Chinese and American people, said Chinese ambassador Cui Tiankai in his condolence message to Young s family on Monday.
The Committee of 100, which Young co-founded in 1990, has been an important bridge for China-U.S. political, economic, cultural and educational exchanges, he said.
