Despite Surging COVID-19 Hospitalizations, Deep East Texas Won t Receive Vaccine Until Next Week

/ Lufkin is the seat of Angelina County where officials are rolling back reopenings because of surging COVID-19 hosptializations. As Texas Gov. Grey Abbott reiterated on Thursday that he wouldn’t require another statewide shutdown, some counties in Deep East Texas are planning their own rollbacks to previous business reopenings. Hospital intensive care units in several counties, including Angelina and Polk, surpassed the 15% threshold for COVID-19 patients set by the state. These counties will reduce capacity in restaurants, gyms, retail stores and other businesses where people gather. Sharon Shaw is administrator of the Angelina Counties and Cities Health District. She told Texas Standard that COVID fatigue, inconsistentmask-wearing, lack of exposure to the consequences of COVID-19, as well as stubbornness, have all likely contributed to the surge in cases.

Hospitals hope vaccine reaches Lufkin this week

Both Lufkin hospitals hope to receive the initial doses of either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine in the coming week. The Pfizer vaccine was approved by the Food and Drug Administration on Dec. 11 and requires two doses, both of which are to be kept at ultra-low temperatures. The Moderna vaccine is still awaiting FDA approval, but would not require the same freezing temperatures. “The state has told us we can expect to receive our initial allotment soon, possibly within the next week,” Woodland Heights Medical Center president Drew Emery said. “We are told it is the Moderna vaccine.” St. Luke’s Health-Memorial remains hopeful to receive 100 doses of a vaccine from either Pfizer or Moderna in the coming week, market president Monte Bostwick said. However, until he sees the vaccine, he isn’t certain of whether that is true, he said.
