EAST Lothian Council has launched a new online platform making it easier for residents to request a service or make a payment. myeastlothian should also help the council process requests more efficiently and effectively, and pave the way for future expansion of online services. THE first phase of planning to create a heritage park at Prestongrange is now under way. East Lothian Council is working to transform the site, following an award from the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund last autumn. The former miners’ bathhouse is now being transformed, with the planned works including the repair and refurbishment of the building providing a volunteer hub, future potential commercial and exhibition space, the construction of a new ‘engine shed’ to better develop and display the museum locomotive collection, as well as repairs to important structures and improvements to access around the site. The project team are also exploring the potential of the former mine workings’ underground water on the site to provide low-carbon energy for heating buildings both at Prestongrange and in the surrounding communities.

A NEW initiative to support volunteering and assist local communities has been launched by East Lothian Council and Volunteer Centre East Lothian (VCEL). VCEL, through a community taskforce which opened for volunteers on Monday, will support the “fantastic work” already undertaken by community councils, resilience groups and other third-sector organisations in response to the recent Covid-19 challenges. Maureen Allan, VCEL chief officer, said: “From lessons learned during the first wave in the spring last year, we recognised the need to better support local organisations with volunteer training, recruitment, policies, disclosure services and volunteer insurance. “The lasting legacy from the resilience groups will be an opportunity for everyone to become involved within their local community across a wide range of volunteering opportunities county-wide, no matter what time they have to spare.
