Two McCloud hobby crafters, Joyce Scarbough and Kat Abbott, have put their passion and love of handcrafting to good use and joined Cards for Soldiers.
This nonprofit organization can be found on Facebook. Cards for Soldiers is for people in the military overseas that sometimes have no other way to connect with their families.
Charly Mathews, coordinator of the program, says that the project is two-fold.
“We make signed greeting cards to be sent to our troops deployed overseas,” Mathews said. “We send cards out to let them know that we appreciate their service. We also send out holidays, birthdays, anniversaries and blank cards for soldiers to send back to their families and keep in touch with them. Troops don t always have access to email or phone service.”

Weed s two cannabis dispensaries came together on Tuesday, April 20 to host a 420 festival celebrating all things cannabaceae.
La Florista and Perfect Union, both located on Weed s Main Street, along with the Weed Chamber of Commerce, hosted the second 420 Festival with street vendors, food, promotions, marijuana product education, live music and drawings throughout the day.
The little town of about 2,700 people got its name from the founder of the local lumber mill and pioneer Abner Weed, according to the City of Weed website. And although the city was once reluctant to allow cannabis businesses, the council implemented a 3% local sales cannabis tax that started in January, said city manager Tim Rundel.

The McCloud Community Services District voted 3 to 2 last week against a $30,000 contract from ZIB (Zone of Increased Benefits) for the McCloud Fire Department.
The contract was for the volunteer fire department in McCloud to respond to the greater McCloud area, which includes Squaw Valley Road, Mt Shasta Forest, and Wilderness Estates subdivisions, which the fire department already does cover.
All fire departments in California already participate in the Mutual Aid Agreement where different fire agencies will come to the aid in other areas if needed.

Dunsmuir mayor Matthew Bryan looks forward to 2021
Shareen Strauss
Dunsmuir’s new mayor Matthew Bryan is committed to following through with the reinvention of his beloved historic town to build a diverse, service-based economy and increase jobs during the pandemic.
One big project that has been in the works is the replacement of the vast majority of the water infrastructure that feeds into Dunsmuir’s residential homes. After 80 years of neglect, Bryan is hoping this multi-million-dollar project can be complete by the year’s end.
A realtor by trade, Bryan also wants to develop greater resources for local businesses and continue to pursue Community Development Block Grants to encourage business development. Applications for new or established businesses are available through Siskiyou County Economic Development or at Dunsmuir City Hall.
