Nelson County Public Schools is pushing ahead with its March 1 transition to hybrid learning just months ahead of when the division will close out its spring semester.
Despite some ongoing concerns, the Nelson County School Board voted unanimously during a Feb. 16 meeting to proceed into the next phase of its return to school plan on the heels of Gov. Ralph Northamâs urging that Virginia school divisions offer an in-person learning option by March 15.
âWe have students who have not sat through a single live class this entire year,â West District board member Shannon Powell said. âIt is a disservice to not offer some in-person option ⦠and the governor essentially set an expectation for that to happen.â

Keyboardist, vocalist and composer Kyle Roussel immediately brightens the atmosphere with wonderful choir-like harmony of “Daylight,” the opening song of his album
Church of New Orleans. As the title of the release suggests, Roussel’s background in gospel music comes into play, along with secular styles such as the New Orleans piano tradition, rhythm and blues and a bit of street beat. This ambitious disc finds the talented Crescent City native over-dubbing his own voice and performing on acoustic piano as well as an array of electronic keyboards and percussion instruments. Joining him are some dozen musicians making up full horn sections that include some of this city’s masters such as drummers Herlin Riley and Shannon Powell; saxophonists Roderick Paulin and Roger Lewis; trumpeter Andrew Baham; trombonist Terence Taplin and more. Obviously, there’s a lot going on.
RACINE â Alderman Henry Perez took a moment during last weekâs City Council meeting to criticize the process that led to the hiring of Racineâs new city administrator, Paul Vornholt. In his criticisms, Perez strongly suggest the Vornholt benefited from personally knowing Mayor Cory Mason.
Perez, however, was the sole alderman to publicly raise concerns as the rest of the council raised no objections before Vornholtâs appointment was confirmed.
Perez repeatedly said that his problem was with the process and not with the person, as he considered Vornholt highly qualified for the position.
âIâve met with the gentleman, and I have no personal issues with him,â Perez said. âHis experience is outstanding.â
