Historians fight to save Kitchener Cold War-era bunker from demolition

KITCHENER Historians are pushing to save a Cold War-era nuclear fallout bunker in Kitchener’s Schneider Park from demolition as the shelter’s fate is set to be determined by Region of Waterloo council this summer. “It’s kind of forgotten,” said Mark Reesor, founder of the Waterloo Bunker Association. “I wish it was appreciated more. These are quite rare.” The association has launched a petition pushing regional council to keep the shelter standing and convert it into an educational site. “We’d like to see it restored, brought back to its original state and then be opened to the pubic to be toured,” Reesor said.

Plain Township will ask voters to approve a 1-mill parks levy this May

PLAIN TWP. – The township will ask voters this May to approve a levy to support parks operations. Voters will see a 5-year, 1-mill parks and recreation operation levy on their May 4 primary ballot. The levy, which would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $35 annually, would generate $887,444 a year. It s the township s second attempt at getting residents to support the parks with tax dollars. Voters rejected a request for a 1.5-mill levy in 2019 by about 350 votes. Township leaders are more confident about this levy request. The 2019 request came at a bad time when property owners had just received tax reappraisals. After it failed, the township went back to the drawing board to figure out what voters would approve, said Scott Haws, president of the Plain Township Board of Trustees.
