Taiwan shares close slightly up in consolidation mode

Taipei, May 26 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan moved in consolidation mode, ending slightly higher Wednesday after lackluster performance on U.S. markets overnight, dealers said.
After a surge the previous day, many tech heavyweights paused to limit the movement of the broader market, while buying rotated to select old economy stocks, giving support to the main board, the dealers said.
The Taiex, the weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange, ended up 48.02 points, or 0.29 percent, at 16,643.69, after moving between 16,523.23 and 16,706.29. Turnover totaled NT$425.76 billion (US$15.32 billion).
The market opened up 0.30 percent as the bellwether electronics sector continued from Tuesday s momentum to move higher, but with the Taiex breaching the 16,700-point mark at one point, selling followed to erode the earlier gains, the dealers said.

Taipei, May 24 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan closed slightly higher Monday after recovering losses caused by fears over an escalation of domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases reported over the weekend, dealers said.
Buying in select old economy stocks, in particular in the shipping and textile sectors, continued on the back of growing global demand, while the bellwether electronics sector climbed out of its earlier weakness, giving additional support to the broader market, the dealers said.
The Taiex, the weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), ended up 36.23 points, or 0.22 percent, at 16,338.29, after moving between 16,136.97 and 16,397.59. Turnover totaled NT$422.97 billion (US$15.16 billion).

Taipei, May 13 (CNA) Taiwan s stock market continued a downward trend Thursday, finishing the session 1.46 percent lower amid escalating fears over a spike in domestic COVID-19 cases, but remained above the six-month moving average of 15,588 points.
The Taiwan Stock Exchange weighted index, or Taiex, ended down 232.27 points, or 1.46 percent, at 15,670.10 after moving between 15,368.54 and 16,031.93. Turnover totaled NT$568.28 billion (US$20.32 billion).
Shares continued their downward trend from the previous day, when the weighted index ended down 680.76 points, or 4.11 percent, at 15,902.37, after tumbling by more than 1,000 points in early trading amid the spike in the number of domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases.

Taipei, May 10 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan closed lower Monday as investors rushed to lock in gains built up in the electronics sector, particularly semiconductor stocks, a session earlier, dealers said.
Buying rotated to non-tech stocks in the raw material industry amid optimism toward a global recovery in demand, and the financial sector also attracted bargain hunting, which prevented the broader market from falling further, the dealers added.
The Taiex, the weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), ended down 49.39 points, or 0.29 percent, at 17,235.61, after moving between 17,188.15 and 17,304.47. Turnover totaled NT$490.215 billion (US$17.51 billion).
