More than $150,000 of it came to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, where Dr. Edward Prochownik has been researching the mutations that are responsible for widely differing rates of survival in children’s liver cancer, or hepatoblastoma.
While the disease has seven different sub-types, most are fairly curable. But some children present with sub-types that drop the average survival rate down to 20%.

PHILADELPHIA (Jan. 7, 2021) Scientists at The Wistar Institute characterized an inhibitor that targets acetate metabolism in cancer cells. Cancer cells use acetate metabolism to support tumor growth in conditions of low nutrient and oxygen availability. This molecule caused tumor growth inhibition and regression in preclinical studies, demonstrating the promise of this approach as a novel therapeutic strategy for solid tumors.
