More than 55 international flags were recently raised in the eerily empty Compton Union Building to honor and acknowledge Washington State University’s international community.
International students, scholars and their families on and off campus persevered during a year marked by a flurry of punitive U.S. immigration policies, the inability to travel internationally and the need to distance from others.
To honor the international community, which is currently spread around the world, members of WSU’s International Students’ Council are hosting a virtual International Education Week April 5 through 9 and have dedicated it to WSU’s students everywhere.

Staff and faculty interested in building equity, social justice, and cultural competency across the Washington State University system and in their communities have a new way to pursue their goal.
The Community and Equity Certificate, now available as an official learning track within Human Resource Services, establishes a foundation of equity-mindedness across all campuses and lays the groundwork for a challenging personal journey.
Building a ‘continuum of practice’
The certificate sprang from a 2018 student request that WSU provide equity and cultural competency training for faculty and staff who engage with students. As a result of that request, a system-wide equity leadership collective developed a workshop series that would give participants a toolkit for engaging more effectively with students, colleagues, and community partners.

When Quinn Morley learned three years ago about a discovery of possible liquid water on Mars, he wanted to find it.
“I realized that no one on our planet had any idea how to get to that water in order to sample it,” he said. “That meant I was at the same place on the problem intellectually as the experts were.”
Morley and his colleague, Tom Bowen, both undergraduates in WSU’s mechanical engineering at Olympic College-Bremerton program, have received a $125,000 grant from NASA’s Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program to study their idea for an autonomous drill for Mars exploration. They’re one of 16 groups from throughout the U.S. and are the first undergraduate team ever to receive a grant from the program, which supports early-stage research into futuristic space ideas.
