Waubonsee s Black History Month to explore history, poetry, music and more   Submitted by Waubonsee Community College Waubonsee Community College will host the following events in February to celebrate Black History Month. An international poetry network of college-educated creatives with a focus on members of historically Black Greek fraternities and sororities within the National Pan-Hellenic Council, will use their platform as a means to bridge poetry and the power of community engagement through fostering a safe space where artistic pursuit can be nourished and positively developed. Join Rashid White, Jeffrey Big Homey Banks and Andrew Drew Drake as they share their spoken word poetry and provide an open mic for others to share their artistic expressions and receive feedback from the Black Greek Poets themselves.

Mifflin Co. Academy of Science and Tech. receives welding grant | News, Sports, Jobs

Feb 5, 2021 LEWISTOWN The Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology was one of nine schools to receive a grant from the American Welding Society Foundation to improve the training capacity of its welding program. According to a news release from the AWS, the Academy was presented with a $25,000 grant, which it will use to support the needs of local industries. “We initially applied for the grant to help get some of the critical testing equipment needed to become an accredited testing facility through AWS,” said Mike McMonigal, supervisor of adult education and post-secondary education at the Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology. “We hope that utilizing the grant will get our students and the program the edge it needs to be a leading welding facility within central Pennsylvania.”

Courtesy of Mumba Kabemba   Updated 1/18/2021 12:05 PM Aurora resident Mumba Kabemba, a student at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, has received a $1,500 scholarship from the Aurora Area Retired Teachers Association. Dick Schindel of Aurora, association president and former East Aurora School District 131 educator, made the announcement.   Kabemba, a 2019 West Aurora High School graduate, is a second-year business administration major at the community college. Her career goal is to become a business adviser to women in refugee camps.
