Liverpool won a treble of cups in 2000/01, lifting the League Cup and FA Cup at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, before extending their reach to Europe and landing the UEFA Cup as well.
The late, great Gerard Houllier was the man in charge, assembling a team that blended home-grown talents with players that he had brought to the club from across Europe. Such was his transformation of the squad, only one inherited player that hadn’t come through the youth ranks was left by the midway stage of the treble season - and that was fan favourite Patrik Berger.
Kachloul Demands Unrealistic Friday, 19th Jan 2001 20:05
It looks as though Hassan Kachloul is certainly on his way from Southampton as his demands have been branded unrealistic by Saints chairman Rupert Lowe. Talks have been going on since Wednesday with Southampton keen to keep the Moroccan.
Lowe said: These have been difficult negotiations and, as things stand, the demands made are unrealistic. His representatives came in with a salary demand that is massively outside our existing pay structure and we are not prepared to break that. The matter rests with Hassan. It depends whether he is reasonable as to whether he stays with us.
Town 5-0 Sunderland Saturday, 29th Dec 2001 18:08
Town continued the revival in dramatic style as Sunderland were thrashed 5-0 at Portman Road this afternoon.
On New Year s Day 2001 Town lost 4-1 at the Stadium of Light and this last game of the year destruction more than makes up for that defeat. The result was Town s first 5-0 win since the Worthington Cup victory over Millwall last season and is Town s biggest ever Premiership win. It is their first five-goal League victory since the 6-1 win against Barnsely in August 1999.
Town lined-up without Sixto Peralta and Titus Bramble who failed fitness tests. They were replaced by Jim Magilton and Thomas Gaardsøe, making only his second Premiership start. Matt Holland came through his test and as usual captained the side.
Bramble New Worry Saturday, 29th Dec 2001 11:07
Titus Bramble has emerged as a third injury worry ahead of today s game with Sunderland (Portman Road 3pm). Sixto Peralta and Matt Holland already face fitness tests prior to the match against Peter Reid s troops.
Bramble has been feeling his achilles tendon in the days since the win over Leicester. His injury isn t thought to be too bad and he is likely to make it. Should he miss out Thomas Gaardsøe may get his second start for the Blues. The more experienced John McGreal is already out with his own ankle problems.
Peralta s condition has improved a great deal in the last day ir so, but he is still rated as very doubtful by George Burley. The Argentinian injured his foot in the Leicester game and a subsequent x-ray showed that he had no broken bones. However, it had been felt that bruising and swelling would make him a non-starter. His foot has improved enough for him to be considered for today, even if it is as an outsider.
