A file photo of a drug haul last year, which saw 2,766 cases booked under the NDPS Act BENGALURU: With police declaring a war on the drug mafia, the number of cases booked under Nacrcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 went up by more than 250% in 2020 compared to the previous year. The number of arrests under the Act increased by nearly 200%. While 2,766 cases were booked under the NDPS Act last year, 3,600 suspects were arrested, including Sandalwood actresses Ragini Dwivedi and Sanjjanaa Galrani and well-known event manager Viren Khanna and his associates, who were nabbed in early September. In 2018, police had booked 285 cases under NDPS Act and arrested 496 suspects. The corresponding numbers were 768 and 1,260 in 2019. Those arrested in 2020 include 72 foreign nationals, up from 44 in 2018 and 38 in 2019.

The case pertains to alleged drug abuse among VIP personalities including Kannada film actors Ragini, Sanjjanaa Galrani, party organiser Viren Khanna, realtor Rahul and others. A few key accused in the case, including former Minister late Jeevaraj Alva s son Aditya Alva, are still at large. The CCB is investigating the drug abuse case after the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested three people hailing from Kerala in Bengaluru, who were allegedly supplying drugs to Kannada film actors and singers last month. Updated: Share Article AAA The Central Crime Branch police, which has stepped up its probe in the drug racket with links to the Kannada film industry, arrested one of the 12 accused named in the case on Monday. According to officials, Vinay Kumar, who had been absconding for the past few months after he was named in the FIR, allegedly organised parties at well-known hotels in the city where he sold drugs. “He did this at the behest of a key accused party organiser and socialite, Viren Khanna, whose bail application was recently rejected. Other accused in the case, including actress Ragini Dwivedi and second division clerk Ravishankar attended these parties,” said a senior CCB official.
