Their neighbors called covid-19 a hoax. Can these ICU nurses forgive them? Peter Jamison © Katherine Frey/The Washington Post Critical care nurse Emily Boucher, left, watches as the relatives of a recovering covid-19 patient visit Johnston Memorial Hospital. ABINGDON, Va. The hospital executives at the lectern called her a hero, and the struggle that had earned Emily Boucher that distinction showed on her face: in the pallor acquired over 12-hour shifts in the intensive care unit, the rings beneath eyes that watched almost every day as covid-19 patients gasped for their final breaths. The pandemic had hit late but hard in the Appalachian highlands the mountainous region that includes Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee and over the winter many of its victims had ended up on ventilators tended by Boucher and her fellow nurses at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

cutNscratch: Jamborees returning to Floyd Country Store dance floor

The Floyd Country Store made it through. The old-time mecca and major draw on The Crooked Road went through some hard times during the pandemic, as did many venues everywhere. In Floyd, though, the store’s Friday Night Jamboree fueled the little downtown’s economy. Venue owners Dylan Locke and Heather Krantz worked to find workarounds, and relied on both livestreaming, donation-based performances and a porch stage out back, where the property abuts a rented guest house, to stage shows. A group calling itself Friends of the Floyd Country Store sparked a crowdfunding campaign last year, raising more than $60,000 by October, according to a post at GoFundMe.com.

A trek through Mount Rogers High Country

Southwest Virginia’s Mount Rogers High Country offers a unique and one of the most spectacular landscapes in our region. Even though it sits in the heart of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, the experience is more similar to that of a western backdrop, such as Wyoming or Montana. It is adorned with rugged rocky summits, expansive grass-covered meadows, magnificent fir and spruce forests, beautiful tumbling streams, and perhaps most distinctively — herds of wild ponies. Centrally located in the vast Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, the High Country has more than 25,000 acres of the loftiest elevation in the state. At its southern border is also the Grayson Highlands State Park.
