Migrant Massacre Puts Focus On Mexican Police Corruption By Jean Luis Arce
02/11/21 AT 8:36 PM
The massacre of a group of migrants whose charred bodies were found in northern Mexico has shone a spotlight on the entrenched links between police and criminals in the violence-ridden country.
A dozen elite police officers have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the killing of 19 people, including at least 14 Guatemalans, near the US border last month.
They are suspected of being connected to gangs battling for control of lucrative people-smuggling routes to the United States. This case is extreme and unacceptable: people who were in the police but who were really criminals, said Maria Elena Morera, president of Common Cause, a non-governmental organization that advocates security reforms.

ISLAMABAD: The Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) on Thursday put off a protest planned for February 17 after an agreement with the government.
Prime Minister Imran Khan talked to media and confirmed the agreement had been reached. An official team is negotiating with the TLP, he said, adding that the party’s demands will be discussed in Parliament. The Premier added that the TLP has postponed its protest until April 20.
Minister for Religious Affairs Noor-ul-Haq Qadri and Minister for Interior Sheikh Rashid signed the agreement on behalf of the government. The agreement will be cancelled if any party commits any violation. The TLP had demanded the French ambassador’s deportation, and a ban on French goods after offensive sketches were published in France that had sparked protests across the Muslim world.
