Exercise ‘Steadfast Defender 2021 to test NATO s new command structure

NATO exercise ‘Steadfast Defender 2021’, which is being held between 12 May and 2 June, will be the first major test of the alliance’s adapted command structure, involving the new Joint Support and Enabling Command (JSEC) in Ulm, Germany, and Joint Force Command (JFC) Norfolk in Virginia in the United States.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was quoted on the alliance’s website on 7 May as saying, “Exercise ’Steadfast Defender 2021’ will test NATO’s readiness and military mobility, with forces deploying across land and sea, all the way from North America to the Black Sea region and off the coast of Portugal . with over 9,000 troops, [demonstrating] that NATO has the capabilities and resolve to protect all allies against any threat.”

HASC Lawmakers to Push Pentagon to Designate Top-Level Leaders for Electromagnetic Warfare

Two key lawmakers on the House Armed Services Committee said they will push the Pentagon to designate a flag officer on the Joint Staff and a senior civilian to take charge of electromagnetic spectrum warfare.
Speaking Tuesday at the Hudson Institute, Rep. James Langevin (D-R.I.) – who chairs the HASC cyber, innovative technologies and information systems subcommittee – said “we sure do need someone in charge,” such as a deputy assistant secretary.
Australia will bolster its defence force, provide more funding for its spies and help exporters find new markets in a massive push back against China.
Canberra-Beijing relations have deteriorated since last year when Prime Minister Scott Morrison called for an independent inquiry into the origins of coronavirus which was identified in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
China has blocked key Australian exports including coal, seafood, beef and barley - and has been blamed for a series of ongoing cyber attacks on Australian institutions.
Some analysts have warned there could be war in the Pacific region in the next five years if China tries to reunify Taiwan by reclaiming the self-governing island of 25 million people.

Lockheed Martin Skunk Works and the Pentagon for the first time established bi-directional communications between fifth-generation aircraft in flight while also sharing operational and sensor data to ground forces during a recent test, according to a company statement on 3 May.
This flight test, named Project Hydra, linked a Lockheed U-2 Dragon Lady high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, five Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters (JSFs), and a Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor in the air and provided real-time fifth-generation data to operators on the ground. The flight test leveraged an Open Systems Gateway (OSG) payload aboard the U-2 to connect the F-22 to the five F-35As via the native Intra-Flight Data Link (IFDL) and the Multifunction Advanced Data Link (MADL).
