Grant funds could help town evaluate cost of riverfront boardwalk plans

Photo courtesy: Town of Wareham Town Planner Ken Buckland hopes state grant money will fund a concept plan and feasibility study for a riverfront boardwalk in downtown Wareham. Officials have explored the idea of a riverfront boardwalk for years one concept drawing for the boardwalk dates back to 2013.  Buckland said grant funds could “give us a bit more information about cost and issues associated with its construction.” Town Administrator Derek Sullivan said he thought it was a good idea, though he noted that the boardwalk was probably still years away from becoming a reality.

Those interested in learning about the future of the Tremont Nail Factory should mark their calendars for Thursday, June 17 at 7 p.m. or Saturday, June 19 at 9:30 a.m. Bentley Companies the newly selected master developer of the Tremont Nail Factory Property and the Wareham Redevelopment Authority plan to hold two outreach events to discuss plans for the Tremont property. The outreach meetings will be held on the site, in the factory’s “Freight Building,” which has electricity and has been used for events such as the “Meet Me At the Tremont” gala.

To renovate or not to renovate that is the question. After receiving no responses to a request for proposals, members of the Wareham Redevelopment authority are wrestling with what to do with the town-owned building at 4 Recovery Rd. During the Wareham Redevelopment Authority’s May 13 meeting, Director of Planning Ken Buckland reported that the town “did not receive any responses” when it asked for new proposals for the property. Just a few months ago, officials thought the building would soon become a site for cannabis testing. But, ultimately, the company that hoped to conduct cannabis testing at 4 Recovery Rd. asked to terminate its lease.

Article to reinvigorate Wareham Village held off for further study Wicked Local WAREHAM – Those awaiting a chance to weigh in on a zoning proposal to reinvigorate downtown Wareham Village will have to wait a little longer. The Wareham Village 1: Reinvestment Subdistrict was on the warrant for the spring town meeting on May 8 as article 16 but the Wareham Redevelopment Authority voted Thursday to refer it to the Planning Board for further study, entailing another public hearing. The WRA first requested the article’s consideration. The vote effectively pushes off consideration of the article to fall town meeting. It’s been about 10 months since the zone change was first introduced, but COVID has helped push off its consideration at town meetings in the interim.

Wareham Village rezoning to be directed to further study at May 8 Town Meeting

Chloe Shelford May 3, 2021 The Wareham Redevelopment Authority voted at their April 29 meeting to ask that the rezoning of Wareham Village be directed to further study at the May 8 Town Meeting. The rezoning has been in the works since summer 2020, and was spearheaded by the Wareham Redevelopment Authority member Richard Swenson. The changes are meant to foster redevelopment of the village while preserving its character and encouraging small business uses through mixed-use zoning. Mixed use zoning allows a variety of uses, including retail, residential, office, entertainment, and culture to fit together in a single environment. Outdoor space including plazas and parks are also incorporated.
