Weezer has always paved its own path in its music, pitting ever-conflicting elements of nostalgia, woefulness and veiled cockiness against one another to create one of the most timeless and enjoyable (and sometimes questionable) discographies in the industry. The band fares no differently on its 15th studio album,
Van Weezer, putting its own undeniable spin on the heavy sounds that rocked the ‘80s and frontman Rivers Cuomo’s own growing years.
Released May 7, more than a year after its initial drop date due to the pandemic,

River Cuomo tells Guitar World that in 2000 Ozzy asked if I had any songs for him, and I just happened to have written ‘Hash Pipe. I sent it to him, but he didn’t end up using it. In another reality, it might have been interesting to hear him singing that song. There s an Ozzy connection on Weezer s new album Van Weezer check Weezer riffin Crazy Train on Blue Dream, with total approval from Ozzy s camp. The songwriting credit for the song is Cuomo, Osbourne Bob Daisley and Randy Rhoads (going into the hall of fame this year!) who are on Blizzard of Oz. Cuomo says, It’s kind of like a sample, really. But we played it.
