Commentary: A few favorite things from 2020

So many unusual and negative things have happened in 2020, it’s easy for people to dismiss the good. I’ve always a been a glass-half-full optimist and this year was no different. Despite all the turmoil that has upended our lives, there have been pockets of goodness and kindness and love and fun. Let me share my favorites of this past year with you. 1. Most of the time, they tip $1,000, collected by followers who send whatever amount they’d like via Venmo. Feds: Stahura deserves prison time, turned blind eye to NWI public corruption prosecutions

HAMMOND — Federal prosecutors are seeking prison time for the disgraced former Whiting Mayor Joe Stahura ahead of his Jan. 13 sentencing hearing.  They argue that from February 2014 to November 2019, the then-mayor of Whiting brazenly stole thousands from his campaign coffers to fuel a gambling habit — even as several, highly publicized prosecutions of corrupt Lake County public officials were making headlines all around him.  Stahura’s conduct did nothing to change the perception that Lake County politicians are corrupt and self-serving, but rather only enhanced it, thereby making it more difficult for those many politicians who serve honestly to raise funds and be trusted by their constituency, prosecutors wrote in a Monday sentencing memorandum filed in U.S. District Court.
