A renewed cycle of autonomous working-class organizing, Black Lives Matter and Indigenous struggles, and multitudinous anti-fascist resistance arose to counter this. In this interview, Shane Burley, author of Fascism Today and Why We Fight, discusses how the various histories and perspectives on anti-fascism can build a new type of moment that can answer the challenges we currently face.

West Des Moines Hy-Vee helps special needs students develop job skills

At the start of the year, Colleen Tendall spent days begging businesses to give her special needs students a chance to learn job skills. She wasn t even requesting her students be paid, the Van Meter high school special education teacher said. All she wanted was a place where her students could gain practical work experience for a few hours two days a week. For the last few years, the students in her Special Education Functional Program had been working at their school s concession stand serving coffee and hot chocolate to students using a donated Casey s cappuccino machine. They would charge students $1 for a hot drink, put the lids on the cups and learn how to manage the money.

Gaston County Star Students, Teachers announced Sponsored by  The Gaston Gazette each year, the school district selects an exceptional student from each high school as the school’s Star Student.   Each student then named their respective Star Teacher, who had the greatest influence on the student during their Gaston County Schools education, and wrote an essay about how the teacher motivated and inspired them.  Each student honoree will receive a framed Star Student certificate and a Star Student lapel pin, and each teacher honoree receives an engraved Star Teacher trophy from  The Gazette.   The students and teachers are recognized during a ceremony and reception at The Schiele Museum in Gastonia, but the pandemic forced the cancellation of the in-person event in 2020 and 2021.
