DETROIT Dearborn native and Fordson High School alum Mike Jaafar was promoted to undersheriff of Wayne County, making him second in command and the first Arab American to be appointed to this position.
In his new role, Jaafar will be overseeing both the jails and law enforcement and will be second in command under Wayne County Sheriff Raphael Ray Washington.
Jaafar, 46, is the father of five and has a long history in law enforcement, having become an officer with the Detroit Police Department in 1994.

The celebration of Napoleon’s life took place in front of a private group of family members and friends who waited to say their final goodbyes. Community leaders paid their respects virtually.
“Benny was someone who was not just a colleague but a friend,” said Detroit police chief James Craig. “And a mentor to many. A man of integrity, a public servant courageously, and someone who was regarded as one of Detroit’s favorite sons.”

“Benny touched the lives of people in this city in a rare and special way,” said mayor Mike Duggan. “In 2000, when I was running for prosecutor Benny would tutor me. And he kept telling me if the police chief and the prosecutor ever work together, we could get the violence down and give the people that are trying to save city what they deserve.”

DETROIT (WXYZ) â On Wednesday, the community said their final farewell to Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon.
The private funeral service was held this morning. Many said their final goodbye, as they celebrated his legacy.
Napoleonâs daughter Tiffani Jackson spoke at the service.
âThis man lying here today truly is the greatest of all times,â she said.
Officials also remembered him as a dedicated public servant.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer explained, âBenny always made time for me and gave me his counsel. Heâd reach out when he saw an issue I needed to address.â
