The Holmes County commissioners approved a resolution to put a renewal of a five-year, 0.25 percent sales tax on the Nov. 2 ballot.
The funds will be used to complete the second half of the 10-year resurfacing project that was laid out by Holmes County Engineer Chris Young when the sales tax was first passed in 2016.
The current five-year, 0.25 percent sales tax has been in place since 2017, and expires at the end of 2021.
The road sales tax has been used to pave 129 miles of county roads, which is about half of the county road system.
“I am very pleased with the repaving program that we have been able to establish here in Holmes County, Young said. It helps all facets of our community, from tourism to industry to the average person just traveling to and from work or school.
Southern Illinois was hit by two lines of strong and severe thunderstorms Thursday afternoon. The region was placed under a severe thunderstorm watch. During the second round of storms, tornado warnings were issued for southeastern Clay and northeastern Wayne County during the 4 p.m. hour after emergency management spotted a funnel cloud two miles south of Flora. The cell that prompted the tornado warnings produced funnel clouds and landspout tornadoes in Altamont and the Tower Hill area in central Illinois.

No arrests have been made in an armed robbery involving a knife Tuesday at the Walgreens in Louisa. According to Louisa Police Chief Greg Fugitt, Officers were dispatched to a reports of an armed robbery at the Walgreens around 3:40 PM. Walgreens employees advised the Lawrence Co 911 Center that a white male with dark hair, white shorts and no shoes nor shirt had presented a knife, demanded various medications and then began fleeing the store. The subject fled in a unknown direction in a 2002 purple/blue Nissan Xterra with license plate, WV 7SL910, which is linked with a theft complaint in Wayne Co, W.Va. The case remains under investigation by Louisa Police Det. Hunter James and Patrolman Teddy Newsome. The Louisa Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Lawrence Co Sheriff’s Office.
