Town Board meeting on shoreline changes is contentious : Marijuana limits, beach smoking draw no comments

(Credit: Reporter file) Despite an effort to delay approval of the shoreline access recommendations initially affecting eight of the most troubled sites around the Island, the Town Board voted 4-1 to change parking regulations at beaches and landings. But before any vote, a public hearing brought resident Bob Kohn to the forefront, initially promising his words wouldn’t be “contentious,” until they were. He and Supervisor Gerry Siller had something of a war of words as Mr. Kohn insisted the new regulations eliminated an entire section that previously banned use of town beaches to nonresidents. He acknowledged the ban had not been enforced, but said now it has been eliminated.

Decision on marijuana: Board votes to opt out: Shoreline access recommendations adopted

Shelter Island Town Hall (Credit: Tara Smith) In a former post, it was stated the Town Board at its May 7 meeting voted to opt out of permitting retail sales of marijuana. That was incorrect. The Board voted to hold a public hearing on the issue on May 28. If the Town ops out, it could be reversed either by a Town Board vote or as a result of a referendum if enough residents petition for a public vote. A petition could put the issue to a vote in November. The town is also holding a public hearing on banning smoking of cigarettes, marijuana or any other substance at either Crescent or Wades beaches. That concern came from members and Police Chief Jim Read, fearing complaints from families with young children if smokers on the beach were in their vicinity. To ban marijuana, they had to ban all substances that might be smoked.

Pop-up businesses seek town approval: Town Board to continue discussions next week

(Credit: Scott Feierstein) Several businesses are looking to the Town Board for a go-ahead to operate on town-owned sites this summer. With Sunset Beach closed last summer because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Islander had a food truck at Crescent Beach. If the state continues its reopening policies as COVID numbers drop, Islander owner Ashley Knight would like to return to the same site this summer. She made the request a few weeks ago and was encouraged to consider Wades Beach or another part of Crescent Beach away from Sunset Beach for her food truck.
